Infrared spectroscopy of low - mass X - ray binaries II
Using CGS4 on UKIRT, we have obtained 2.00–2.45 μm infrared spectra of a number of low-mass X-ray binaries including Sco X-1, Sco X-2, and GX13+1. Sco X-1 shows emission lines only, supporting our previous conclusion that the spectral type of the evolved secondary must be earlier than G5. Emission lines are also seen in the spectrum of Sco X-2, confirming the identity of the IR counterpart. We ...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملRapid optical spectroscopy of X-ray binaries with Keck II
iThe large collecting area of 4+ metre class telescopes allows atronomers to observe bright objects on faster timescales than previously possible. In order to exploit this capability, we designed a novel readout mode for use on the 10-m Keck-II telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. This took the form of a continuous read-out mode, enabling us to obtain a target spectrum between 3500 and 8500 Å, with ...
متن کاملNear IR spectroscopy of candidate B[e]/X-ray binaries
We present near IR spectra (0.8–2.5μm) of the two candidate B[e]/X-ray binary systems CI Cam/XTE J0421+560 and HD34921/1H 0521+37. The spectra of both systems show evidence for a more complex circumstellar environment than those seen in classical Be/X-ray binaries. Strong H i and He i emission is seen, confirming the presence of a dense circumstellar wind; O i, Fe ii and [Fe ii] emission in CI ...
متن کاملOptical spectroscopy of (candidate) ultra-compact X-ray binaries
We present (preliminary) results of our systematic spectroscopic study of (candidate) ultra-compact X-ray binaries. Most candidates are confirmed and we found the first optical spectra of (pure) carbon-oxygen accretion discs.
